Match Summary

Chelsea roared to a very comfortable 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Terry and Costa.

The Blues recorded a massive 28 shots in the game, whilst their counterparts clearly were still bloated from their Christmas turkey, managing only six with none on target.

It meant it was an easy ride home in the end for the Blues faithful, who were in fine voice at a cold Stamford Bridge.

Despite large periods of domination, it was only until the 31st minute that we managed to see the game’s first goal. It came from Chelsea, and as so often is the case, it came from a set-piece.

Fabregas’ floated balls in had been poor in the match up to this point but his ball found a rising Costa, who nudged it goalwards for Terry to tap in from two yards. It was the captain’s second goal in two matches.

Double the time period and you would double the scoresheet, for Chelsea made it two-nil in the 62nd minute. Costa was set free by Hazard and looked like he had worked the ball too many times, but cutting the ball back on his left and rifling it past three defenders and the goalkeeper is no mean feat.

Interspersed between the two goals were all Chelsea. Matic had shots, so too Willian. West Ham did hit the post three minutes from time but it would have been undeserved. It was one of the most one-sided matches you will witness, as I did with my match pictures from Stamford Bridge, which you can access from the top of this page.

Man of the Match

john-terry.thumbnailJOHN TERRY: Matic was quietly superb as ever but you cannot praise enough Mr Terry, who is playing some of the best football in his career. Was going to give no Christmas present to West Ham as he nullified Andy Carroll to maximum effect, and got a treat of his own with the goal. Had to put up with interesting West Ham chants but us Chelsea fans, and of course he himself, responded superbly.  8/10

Manager Reaction

Mourinho was pleased with how his side coped: “We played a very good game against a very difficult opponent, a very difficult defensive side. When we scored we had the game always under control. We coped very well with the direct football and dealt with a difficult player like Andy Carroll.”

Allardyce knows his side were well-beaten: “We did not do enough to affect them today because of the quality they have. I said if we were going to get anything against Chelsea you have to play your best but even then that might not be good enough.”
