The 2011/2012 season was a historic season for Chelsea as the Blues became Champions League winners for the first-time in their history, but it was not without its drama.
Andre Villas-Boas was appointed and hoped to be in the mould of his mentor, Jose Mourinho, but disappointing results in England and abroad meant his assistant, Roberto Di Matteo, took over from March. His rescuing act saw him over-turn a 3-1 first-leg deficit against Napoli as the Blues marched on to Munich, beating Bayern Munich in their own back yard to lift Europe’s premier competition.
At home, Chelsea could also call themselves FA Cup winners. Both these wins glossed over the League Cup quarter-final defeat, and the lowly sixth-placed finish in the Premier League.
