December was a crucial month for Chelsea, but Andre Villas-Boas once again could not deliver to the maximum, with Roman Abramovich’s patience was being tested to the limit.

A great start saw Chelsea beat Newcastle 3-0, followed by a crucial 2-1 win over Manchester City, who had not lost all season. However, three drab draws to Wigan, Tottenham and Fulham dampened people’s high spirits over the festive period, with 2011 rounded off with a horrific display, losing 3-1 to Aston Villa.

The last Champions League group stage match was critical if Chelsea wanted to further their stay in the year’s competition. Chelsea needed to win or draw 0-0 to go through to the latter stages of the competition – any other result would have meant an early elimination. Chelsea, thanks to a Didier Drogba-inspired performance, won resoundingly 3-0.
