May was make-or-break month for Chelsea. A 2-0 loss to Necastle, followed by a heavy 4-1 loss to Liverpool in the league made sure Chelsea could not finish fourth, even if the season ended on a high with a 2-1 win against Blackburn.
A FA Cup victory put a smile on fans’ faces at least, with one silverware already in the bag, seeing out Liverpool 2-1 with one of the greatest saves in FA Cup history from Petr Cech.
But the Champions League was the real one Abramovich cared about, knowing that they had to win just to be in the competition next season, let alone winning it for the joy of winning it. A late equaliser from Didier Drogba cancelled out a 82nd-minute Bayern goal, with Didier Drogba scoring the winning penalty kick to deliver Chelsea’s dream.
