On the back of our first Champions League win, Roberto Di Matteo was offered the full-time role, but dismissed when Chelsea became the first defending champions to exit at the group stage. Chelsea turned to the hated Rafa Benitez, who was employed no doubt to try to get the best out of Fernando Torres.
But it was always going to be hard to follow on from such a memorable season last season. A third place finish was respectable if not anything to shout about, and semi-final exits in the FA Cup and League Cup were disappointing.
Runners-up in the minor competitions — Community Shield, Super Cup, Club World Cup — added salt to the wound as Chelsea struggled to juggle the demands of seven competitions, all supposedly a reward for a fantastic 2011/2012 season.
In the end, they could celebrate with a Europa League trophy, and be in the knowledge that Rafa Benitez was to depart after his interim time came to an end.
