August saw the start of Chelsea’s Premier League campaign and after a season of glory, the triumphant atmosphere continued into the early matches of the new season. A safe 2-0 at Wigan preceded two confident home wins against Reading and then Newcastle United, with the scorelines at 4-2 and 2-0 respectively.

The reward for Champions League success was the Super Cup match against Europa League winners, Atletico Madrid, but Falcao delivered a masterclass as Chelsea ended the month with an embarrassing 4-1 loss.

The summer transfer window was still open for late purchases as Cesar Azpilicueta was snapped up, as was Victor Moses, as Chelsea looked to beef up their right-hand side. This followed much speculation about the arrival of either Maicon or Gregory van der Wiel to cover the right-back berth. As for departures, De Bruyne was sent on loan to Werder Bremen, Benayoun went to West Ham, Kakuta to Vitesse and Essien tried his hand at Real Madrid.
